Attending school meetings with you.
Observing your child in school.
Reviewing your child's IEP/504 plan.
Recommending services and specific accomodations.
Teaching you what you need to know as a parent of a child with learning differences.
Providing in-service trainings to your child's team about your child's specific disability.
As parents, we want the best for our kids. We want our kids to be healthy and happy. We want them to grow up and be able to contribute to society in a meaningful, productive way.
There is no doubt that there will be many challenges for our kids when they learn, think or behave differently from their peers. However, just because a child has a learning difference (LD), does not mean he/she won't be successful. In fact, students with LDs, including ADHD and Asperger's, who have high levels of self-awareness, self-advocacy skills and self-determination have very high self-reported views of their own success and overall life statisfaction as adults.
These are the factors we need to be thinking about everyday as we help our children face their challenges. There is no better expert on your child than you. Let's collaborate our shared expertise, and I can help you answer some of the following questions.
Your child is struggling in school. He/She might have a diagnosis, but do you have an indepth understanding of why he/she is struggling and what skills he/she needs to develop?
Are you getting the help you've asked for?
Is your child receiving appropriate special education services? Are they effective?
Is your child's social and emotional learning being addressed?
Have you ever left an IEP, 504 or other school meeting feeling overwhelmed, confused or frustrated?
Do you know your rights? Your child's rights? The school's rights and responsibilities?
There's a lot to know. You don't have to do it alone.
