Students with Learning Differences (LDs) face unique challenges.

Students with LDs need to have a healthy and realistic understanding of how they learn.

The 3 keys to success for individuals with (LDs) are

2. Self-Advocacy Skills
3. Self-Determination

Therapy or counseling focused on these keys for success is empowering for individuals with ADHD, Autism or Aspergers.

ADHD Is A Developmental Delay

The ADHD brain is slower to develop those essential executive functioning skills necessary for planning, organizing, and time management.

While the brain will keep catching up, it will always be a bit behind.

Developmentally, an 18 year old with ADHD may function more like a 15 year old.

Uneven Skills

It is common for those with neurodevelopmental disorders like ADHD, Aspergers and Autism to have uneven skills. Just because someone is “smart” and has above average or even superior intelligence, does not mean that social or executive functioning skills will be equally proficient.

The key is learning how to use our strengths to help compensate for challenges.

ADHD and Girls

Research shows that females who get diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood may go 10 years or more receiving treatment for anxiety and depression, when the primary diagnosis was ADHD.

When depression and anxiety are mild to moderate and ADHD is present, it is recommended to treat the ADHD first.

Growing Up On The Spectrum

Adolescence is a time of great brain development. As the brain goes through a process of neuro-network pruning, strong emotions and intense hormones can become difficult to manage.

It is important to talk to teens and young adults about the unwritten and rapidly changing rules of social behaviors.

Individuals with ASDs have difficulty with abstract and inferential thinking. This needs to be considered when talking about important topics like dating, hygiene, sex and more.
